This year, the Flight 93 National Memorial honors the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93 on the 14th anniversary of September 11 with two days of special programs, including the dedication of the new visitor center on Thursday, Sept. 10 and the annual observance of 9/11 on Friday, Sept. 11. The Flight 93 National Memorial honors the courage of the heroes of Flight 93 in a beautiful blend of nature and architecture.

Forty memorial groves of 40 trees each sweep along the inside of the park’s entrance road from the visitor center complex to the Memorial Plaza as a living memorial to the passengers and crew members. The groves consist of Sugar Maple, White Oak, and Elm trees, which radiate toward the center of the Field of Honor. In addition to the 40 Memorial Groves, a reforestation effort is a part of the memorial’s overall landscape design.

Earlier this year, the National Park Service and volunteers from the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial came together to prune the trees that make up the Memorial Groves dedicated to the 40 passengers and crew of United Flight 93. Time and equipment were provided by the Friends of Flight 93, the Davey Tree Expert Company, and Corona Tools.
