Research Leads to Industry Qualification Program

The Turfgrass Water Conservation Alliance has set a standard and qualified more than two dozen varieties of drought-tolerant grasses that are being sold across the nation. The nonprofit group is made up of independent researchers and seed producers who are dedicated to recognizing plants that provide a clear benefit in water conservation. There are now scientific testing and third-party verification standards in place, and turfgrass varieties that are TWCA-qualified should be considered green by industry standards. WNA Hosting Winter Workshop

The Wisconsin Nursery Association will hold its Winter Workshop at the Country Springs Hotel in Waukesha on February 2. Speakers will include Dr. R. Chris Williamson, associate professor of entomology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; Bob Dahl, Wisconsin DATCP; Kelly Kearns, Wisconsin DNR; Christy Webber, president and founder of Christy Webber Landscapes; Dr. Laura Jull, associate professor of horticulture at UW-Madison and state extension specialist of woody ornamental horticulture; Melinda Myers, horticulturist, author and radio/TV personality; and Dr. Brent McCown, professor of horticulture at
UW-Madison.

ASLA Wins Award, Releases Call for Entries

The American Society of Landscape Architects’ green roof in Washington, D.C., has earned recognition as one of the best in North America. Green Roofs for Healthy Cities presented ASLA with a 2010 Award of Excellence in the institutional intensive category, which honors innovative green roof design in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

ASLA released its 2011 awards call for entries for professionals and students. The award-winning projects will be featured in a video presentation at the annual meeting, and on the awards website following the event. Visit www.asla.org for deadlines, submission guidelines and other information.

PGMS Presents 2010 Awards

The Professional Grounds Management Society honored several grounds professionals with numerous awards as part of its annual awards dinner.

The society presented the 2010 Gold Medal to John Deere, the E. Earl Wilson Award to Jeffrey Bourne and President’s Awards to Marion Bolick and John Doiron. The society also recognized Kevin Harvey, Mike Loftus and Gene Pouly for their longtime service to the association and board of directors.
