Annie’s Project Celebrates 20 Years of Empowering Women in Agriculture

Annie’s Project, a national non-profit to educate and empower women in agriculture, is celebrating 20 years since its founding. Today, the program has over 19,000 graduates across 38 states and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Annie’s Project is an education program for women in agriculture and uses a methodology that builds confidence, develops networks and creates lifelong learners among women farmers, ranchers, growers, landowners, and agriculturalists. The inaugural class of 10 women met in February 2003 in Centralia, IL, and several members of the group gathered again for a virtual meeting via Zoom to share memories of those early meetings and the impact Annie’s Project has had on their farms and lives this month to commemorate the milestone. Annie’s Project is based on the life of a farm woman, Annie Fleck, who spent her lifetime learning how to be an involved business partner with her husband. She died in 1997 and was the inspiration for her daughter, Ruth Fleck Hambleton, to create Annie’s Project in 2003. Hambleton was a Farm Business Management and Marketing Educator for University of Illinois Extension at the time. “Watching Mom and everything she did gave me tremendous empathy for what women were going through on the farm operation,” says Hambleton. In Annie’s Project classes, trained facilitators provide safe harbor, connection, discovery, and shared experiences. Vetted instructors and presenters deliver unbiased research-based information to small, dynamic groups of women. The core of Annie’s Project are two courses that address the five areas of risk identified by USDA. ...

“For The Love Of Labor” Grant Promotes Women In Skilled Trades

Carhartt created its “For the Love of Labor” grants to increase female representation in the skilled trades. Applications are due February 17. With the skilled labor shortage remaining a challenge across several industries, opportunities for women to enter the trades are stronger than ever. Women’s share of the ever-expanding construction workforce reached an all-time high – 14 percent – in 2022¹, and the number of minority women apprentices has nearly doubled in recent years.² With that in mind, and looking ahead to International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8, Carhartt is dedicating its Spring 2023 round of bi-annual “For the Love of Labor” grants to increase female representation in the skilled trades. Now through February 17, eligible nonprofit organizations that help place women in skilled positions can apply for the Spring 2023 grants, which are part of the brand’s commitment to strengthening and diversifying America’s workforce. Recipients will be announced in early March ahead of International Women’s Day as part of Carhartt’s larger celebration of women in the skilled trades.   “While women have always played a vital role in this country’s rich history of labor, they remain disproportionately underrepresented in the skilled trades, where many of the jobs are historically male-dominated,” said Linda Hubbard, president and COO at Carhartt. “Carhartt was founded on the belief that careers in the skilled trades provide rewarding and inclusive job opportunities, and through our next round of grants, we strive to empower like-minded organizations that champion women as an integral part of America’s ...

August Purchases Of Dovetail Workwear Support Pathways for Single Moms

Dovetail Workwear is a super-cool, super comfortable, super functional line of women’s workwear perfect for female landscapers. (I should know. I own a pair of Britt Utility Denim pants and not only LOVE them, but have gotten compliments on them!) And now, until August 31, every purchase on DovetailWorkwear.com will be donated to the Pathways for Single Moms Program. Founded in 2020 by the Women’s Foundation for the State of Arizona, The Pathways for Single Moms Program employs a multi-pronged approach that shifts the future of low-income families through a combination of educational and economic opportunities to equip mothers with the tools they need to become economically self-sufficient. In Arizona, there are nearly half a million full-time working women who lack a college degree—more than 70,000 of whom are single mothers. None of the five most common occupations for single mothers of young children provide a median wage higher than $30,000. Without a path to further education, these mothers cannot increase their earning potential. Those accepted into the Pathways program receive 100% paid tuition for a one-year certificate in technical education, and Quality-First/kindergarten-ready childcare. They also receive a stipend to use towards living expenses, computer equipment, transportation, and more, as well as emergency funds. WFSA has also partnered with the YWCA to provide additional support, including case management, access to free clothing, hygiene supplies, ongoing career coaching, financial planning, digital literacy training, and wellness programs like the Women’s Counseling Network which provides referrals to free counseling for women without insurance ...

The agenda will feature leadership and educational sessions, with a mix of agronomics, personal and professional development, as well as networking opportunities with speakers and other attendees during small group break outs and social activities. “Although women account for a small percentage of the golf and turf industry, the number of women involved in these industries is growing and we’re thrilled to be a part of that growth and sponsor this event,” said Will MacMurdo, head of the Bayer U.S. Turf and Ornamentals Business. “We believe that diversity and inclusion make for a stronger industry, and this event solidifies our commitment to both. Bayer continues to look for opportunities to grow leaders in the industry through this event and others, like Green Start Academy.” The event is open to superintendents, assistant superintendents and other women in ...
