Even though the air is crisp, spring is on everyone’s mind. And that’s no different for Pantone, the color authority in the design industry whose experts work several seasons ahead to stay on top of trends.

At the end of New York Fashion Week in mid-September, Pantone revealed spring 2017’s hot hues. They are calling for bold and bright bursts mixed with those that convey a sense of earthiness as the weather warms.

“One of the things that we saw this year was a renewed sense of imagination in which color was appearing in context that was different than the traditional,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “From the warmth of sunny days with primrose yellow to the invigorating feeling of breathing fresh mountain air with kale and the desire to escape to pristine waters with island paradise, designers applied color in playful, yet thoughtful and precise combinations to fully capture the promises, hope and transformation that we yearn for each spring.”

Their colors include:

1. Kale

It’s not only in smoothies and salads; it’s oxygenating structures with vertical gardens, rooftop greenery and leafy plazas. It’s evocative of the great outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. “And, just as we see in nature, this lush and fertile natural green shade provides the perfect complementary background to the more vibrant tones in the palette,” says Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute.

2. Flame

A red-fused orange with a lot of heat; flamboyant and fun-loving.

3. Lapis blue

An anchoring blue that has a bit more vitality than navy — Pantone calls it an “inner radiance.”

4. Island paradise

A refreshing aqua that is emblematic of tropical settings and our need to unwind, calling to mind a change of scenery.

5. Primrose yellow

Sparkles of pure sunlight and instant warmth, taking one to a place of good cheer and sunny days.

6. Niagara

A denim-like blue speaking to one’s desire for ease and relaxation.

7. Pale dogwood

An extension of rose quartz, a pale pink and one of the 2016 colors of the year, this shade is a quiet and peaceful pink that leaves an aura of innocence and purity.

8. Greenery

A tangy yellow-green that speaks to exploration and experimentation.

9. Pink yarrow

A festive and tropical hue that is unignorable. “Bold, attention getting and tempestuous, the lively [color] is captivating and stimulating, lifting spirits and getting the adrenaline going,” shares Pressman.

10. Hazelnut

A neutral with a warm undertone and natural earthiness. This is a transitional color meant to connect the seasons.
