WATERLOO, Iowa —The city of Waterloo is removing and improving bus benches in an effort to comply with federal Americans With Disabilities Act standards.

A local official says the city plans to end its contract with the company that provides and sells advertising on Waterloo’s 141 bus benches.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier newspaper reports that city would then install 50 new benches and could bid out advertising to raise funds for maintenance and snow removal.

The ADA Compliance Commission voted last week to spend $75,000 to replace the first 20 benches. MET Transit is expected to match $30,000 in funding.

The U.S. Department of Justice asked the city to ensure its bus benches are usable by people with disabilities after residents voiced concerns in March 2011.
