WELLINGTON, Ohio – Talk about a road trip; Cub Cadet, manufacturer of consumer and commercial mowers, is just completing a doozy.

At last count the company was taking its Cub Cadet Test Drive Challenge to more than 80 locations, starting in Atlanta in late February and ending in Ohio. As I write this, the Challenge is on its final leg with the last stop set for Gallipolis in southeast Ohio on Thursday, June 14.

The Challenge, which I caught at Wellington Implement, in the small city of the same name about a 50-minute drive southwest of Cleveland, is quite a traveling road show. Cub Cadet shows up with tents, music, some great swag and mowers-lots of Cub Cadet mowers to test drive.

As I got to the Wellington Implement stop pretty early in the morning, it took some sunshine before folks started showing up to hop aboard one of the dozen or show mowers on display. Most of the test drivers appeared to be homeowners.

That wasn’t unexpected. Most of the professional cutters in the region were almost certainly out making money. Ohio, like all of the eastern United States, experienced its earliest spring in memory. The grass in north central Ohio got out of control before most contractors were in full operational mode.

Even so, as the morning progressed more test drivers checked out (and wheeled around) Cub Cadet’s new SZ Commercial unit. The shiny new mower was prominently displayed on a small hill in front of the third-generation agricultural and grounds care equipment dealership.

Cub Cadet’s new SZ Commercial zero-turn mower features a steering wheel (Synchro Steer technology), which seemed to be much appreciated by the folks that ran it up and down (and all around) that small hill. Several also commented about the comfortable ride provided by the suspension seat.

Getting a chance to hop aboard a brand new shiny mower and wheel around in my new free tee-shirt while listening to some great country tunes being cranked out from the mobile unit of a local radio station -this was definitely a late spring morning well spent.
