WASHINGTON, D.C. – As a service to its community of glyphosate registrants, formulators, distributors and applicators in the lawn care and vegetation management markets, RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment) is providing information about today’s announcement of the glyphosate rating by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Glyphosate–an active ingredient in many herbicides, including Roundup from Monsanto, the original registrant–was reviewed by IARC and its conclusions were published today in Lancet Oncology.

IARC’s limited literature review ranks glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen,” a classification that is inconsistent with numerous multiyear, comprehensive assessments conducted by hundreds of scientists from countries worldwide who are responsible for ensuring public health and safety, including the United States and European Union.

“This rating doesn’t support other agencies’ science intensive determinations, including the EPA or other leading nations’ regulatory findings,” says RISE President Aaron Hobbs. “U.S. EPA’s regulatory system ensures every pesticide product enters the market only when its safety has been assured.”
