MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The spiraling whitefly has invaded many parts of central and southern Florida, causing significant damage to palms, trees and shrubs. TruGreen offers Florida homeowners a solution with long-term control to help protect palms, plants and shrubs from this damaging insect.

The spiraling whitefly is similar in appearance to a small moth. Most likely originating from Central America, the spiraling whitefly can gather in such great numbers that entire colonies of whiteflies can emerge when an affected plant is shaken. This whitefly is particularly adapted to feeding on many types of plants including gumbo limbo, black olive and Brazil beautyleaf trees; also palms such as areca, coconut and foxtail, and birds of paradise shrub.

The good news is that in most cases, the spiraling whitefly will not kill healthy, large trees and palms. However small, newly planted or unhealthy plants with extremely high infestations could possibly die if not treated quickly.

Visit TruGreen.com to learn more about the spiraling whitefly and to schedule an appointment with a Florida pest expert.
