WNA Elects Officers, Presents Scholarship

At its 2009 Winter Workshop, the Wisconsin Nursery Association elected the following officers to serve their second one-year terms: Paul Huggett, president; Scott Johnson, vice president; and Dan Krueger Jr. Erin Maurer was elected to the board of directors for her second three-year term.

WNA presented a $1,000 scholarship to Nathan Urben, New Glarus, Wis. He is majoring in horticulture and Spanish at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

WESTERN Helps Members Become LinkedIn

The WESTERN Nursery & Landscape Association has a group on the LinkedIn Web site, www.linkedin.com, where its members can comment on select articles from electronic newsletters, participate in online discussions and stay in touch with colleagues and clients. LinkedIn is a network of experienced professionals from around the world, representing 170 industries and 200 countries.

WGIF Hall of Famer Passes Away

Paul L. Swartz, who was inducted into the Wisconsin Green Industry Federation’s Hall of Fame in 2003, has passed away at the age of 78. He started Paul Swartz Nursery in 1949 near Wilmot, Wis. Swartz was a member and past president of the Wisconsin Nursery Association and co-founder and past president of the Mid-America Trade Show.

ANLA Presents Award, Launches Web Site

The American Nursery & Landscape Association presented its 2008 Retail Rising Star Award to Mark Ziemba, general manager of Russell’s Tree & Shrub Farm, East Amherst, N.Y. Ziemba has been with Russell’s since 2001. The company was founded in 1991 and is owned and operated by Russ Gullo.

ANLA launched a new Web site at www.ANLA.org. The site features easier navigation, detailed member profiles and the Knowledge Center.

Caldwell, Collier Elected to TCIA Board

The Tree Care Industry Association elected Kevin Caldwell to a three-year term on its board of directors. He is president of Caldwell Tree Care, Roswell, Ga.

Terrill R. Collier was installed as the chair of TCIA’s board of directors. He has been the owner, operator and president of Collier Arbor Care, Clackamas, Ore., since 1980.

ASLA Convenes Blue Ribbon Panel

The American Society of Landscape Architects formed a Blue Ribbon Panel of design professionals to discuss and make recommendations on the National Park Service’s milestone plan outlining a comprehensive overhaul of the historic National Mall. The panel included Angela Dye, Joe Brown, Gary Hilderbrand, Harry Hunderman and Robin Fran Abrams. For more information about the project, visit www.asla.org/nationalmall.

PLANET Holds Day of Service

The Professional Landcare Network held a Day of Service on Earth Day in which members undertook a variety of volunteer lawn and landscape projects in communities across the country to demonstrate the importance of maintaining green spaces. Iowa City Landscaping worked in parks in Iowa City and Coralville, Iowa, to repair damage from last year’s flooding. Buck & Sons Landscape Service, Inc., Hilliard, Ohio, installed an educational planting display at Britton Elementary School. Richard Heller of Greener by Design donated time and services to the Pelham Art Center, Westchester, N.Y. The New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association created a habitat for ruffed grouse at a Boy Scout camp in Hardwick, N.J. For more information, visit http://www.planetdayofservice.org.

NTEA Notes

Reading Truck Body, LLC, Reading, Pa., won two awards at the Work Truck Show 2009, which was held in conjunction with the 45th annual National Truck Equipment Association convention. Reading’s new Aluminum Classic II service body earned the Editors’ Choice Award for New Product Innovation and the inaugural Work Truck Show Green Award.

Show attendees voted the Mega Blade Revolution snowplow from Sno-Way International, Inc., Hartford, Wis., the most innovative product introduced at the show, earning it the New Product Innovation Award.

Andrew L. Outcalt was installed as the 45th NTEA president at the show. He is president of Meyer Products and Swenson Spreader, Cleveland, Ohio.

NTEA elected three new members to its board of trustees for three-year terms. They are Steve Hayes, Layton Truck Equipment, Colorado Springs, Colo.; Shawn Jacobs, STS Trailer & Truck Equipment, Syracuse, N.Y.; and Richard Sippola, Carnegie Body Co., Cleveland, Ohio.
