CALCP members plant test plots atRiverside Cemetery in Denver, Colo.

CALCP Undertakes Cemetery Project

The first annual Colorado Association of Lawn Care Professionals Day of Service project was held at the Riverside Cemetery, chosen because it is the oldest cemetery in Denver, having been established in 1876. Its water supply for outdoor irrigation was cut off in 2003. Ray Daugherty, horticulturist at Front Range Community College, developed a sustainable plan to plant native grasses, perennials, wildflowers, shrubs and trees.

CALCP members planted test plots with various seed mixes to determine what will grow well with little supplemental water. Members also removed dead trees and shrubs; aerated, fertilized and raked the test plots; and did general cleanup. Products and funds were donated by Arkansas Valley Seed, Pawnee Butte Seed, High Country Gardens, Sharp Brothers Seed, Western Native Seed Co., Beauty Beyond Belief, Helena Chemical Co., John Deere Landscapes, Chem-Way and Alpha One, Inc.

ASLA Blue Ribbon Panel Lends Vision to National Mall Crisis

A panel of leading design professionals convened by the American Society of Landscape Architects offered a vision for building a sustainable future for the National Mall. The panel addressed imperative repairs needed—including Tidal Basin seawall reconstruction, replacement of the Capitol Reflecting Pool and revitalization of severely compacted lawn areas—while also emphasizing the opportunities that exist.
