Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis; EAB) is killing tens of millions of Fraxinus, wreaking havoc on boulevards and growing fields alike. But a broad selection of shade trees is available, ready to serve as suitable substitutes.
TURF magazine’s sister publication American Nurseryman has compiled a list of shade trees suitable for the landscape in regions that have been ravaged by EAB, such as the upper Midwest. Landscape and nursery professionals there are eliminating
green, white, black and blue ash from their inventories and designs, and replacing them with other useful pest-resistant tree species.
Not all of the trees on the American Nurseryman list will be appropriate for your particular needs, but the selections comprise a broad palette from which to choose.
